Past Life Regression, Collective Unconscious, Healing our Lives
By Gwynne Mayer
Many years ago, in my training in hypnosis which was part of my clinical psychology training, I had the experiences, many in fact, of delving into my own past lives as well as watching the healing factor of others as well.....Recently, I was watching Dr. Weiss and Dr. Oz on Oprah discussing 'past life regression'.
Wikipedia states the following:
"Past Life Regression (PLR) is typically undertaken for one of two reasons. First, in a therapeutic setting it can be used in an attempt to resolve a whole range of emotional, psychological or psychosomatic problems. Second, it can be used by the curious for a spiritual experience. Usually therapists use a light hypnosis trance inductions to regress clients into apparent past lives. Some PLR therapists also use bridging techniques from a client's current life problem to bring past life stories to conscious awareness spontaneously. [1]. Most "past lives" contain few historical details, however they are relevant to the client. Some are even short and brutal. Nevertheless, occasionally subjects come up with a plethora of names, dates and places that can be checked."
Dr. Weiss, a Yale MD graduate, also head of Mt. Sinai Psychiatric clinic, is no metaphysical new age guru, however he has tapped onto something that Jung tapped onto many years ago, with the Collective Unconscious, which holds all lives, all histories, etc.....We tend, in our Jungian circles, not to identify with the New Age as much, but the truth is, it is approaching, the languaging of our dreams, our reflections our unconscious speaking to us in many ways, without the agenda of the conscious mind always interrupting. Unfortunately, for most, our dreams are our only source of knowledge as to our 'time honored past'...
I am recommending the following books by Dr. Weiss, Mirrors of Time: Using Regression for Physical, Emotional and Spiritual Healing, Many Lives, Many Masters, Same Soul, Many Bodies. These books will give you a professional MD's response to past life regression and hopefully set you on a road of understanding.
I have watched, personally, healings of anxiety, bodily issues, and miraculous forgiveness come after sessions in which persons regress past the immediate history of their present life. I have seen, for myself, the incredible lifting of depression, compulsive behaviors and psychological blocks when the person, being regressed, goes back in time to a place that allows this release. Recently, my own dreams have become somewhat urgent, taking me back into times where it is difficult for me to discern the nature of the 'life'. I only have my journaling and memory of these dreams to help me create a map to tell my story. Journaling is of major importance in one's life, to keep record of one's own memories, dreams and reflections.
We do not have to believe that this is contrary to our religious beliefs, as it is not 'a belief'. To go back in time and leave the bearings of the 21st century , is often disheartening and yet, that adventure holds the key to our future as well as our past. It might solves some of the dilemmas we have as to our purposes in life, our relationships, health, cultural biases and global unity. We are all 'one' as we delve into our collective unconscious/past lives and we have been shown the way many times. It might be something many of you have tried and found release, but others have tried and found nothing. Speaking as one who has followed this 'road less traveled', it is something to consider.
The collective unconscious in Jung's terminology is a safe road for all to use rather than 'past lives', because we really don't have a term for 'time beyond our present realities' do we? Our ability to be quantum thinkers becomes mixed in with all the minutae of the present moment. So where does our obsession with the present reality get us?
Personally, astrological studies mixed in with a depth psychology helps me see symbolic 'past lives' and the depth of my understanding after forty years of doing this is, indeed, awesome, to say the least.
